ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES

CONCEPT

The ESPP Program constitutes a financial recognition by the State —through FONAFIFO — granted to forest and plantation owners for the environmental services rendered by them, which directly affect the protection and improvement of the environment.

According to Forestry Law 7575, Costa Rica recognizes the following environmental services:

 
Mitigation of gas emissions generated by the greenhouse effect (fixation, reduction, sequestration, storing and absorption).
Water protection for urban, rural or hydroelectric uses
Protection of biodiversity for its conservation, sustainable, scientific and pharmaceutical uses; research and genetic improvement; protection of ecosystems and life forms.
Natural scenic beauty for tourism and scientific purposes.

The most important characteristic of this Program is that it changed the traditional concept of “subsidy” or “incentive” for “economic recognition” for environmental services provided through forests, which, in turn, contributes to increase the ecological, social and economic value thereof.
