HISTORY |
During the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Costa
Rica — based on more than 20 years of experience in forestry
Incentive Programs and Systems of Protected Areas— committed
to comply with the goals aimed at guaranteeing the country's environmental
sustainability. As a result, the basis for the Payments for Environmental
Services Program (ESPP) was established, in relation to management,
conservation and sustainable development of natural resources.
FONAFIFO was constituted
in 1996; since 1997, the ESPP was implemented to benefit small and
medium landowners whose properties have forests or were suitable
for forestry activities, in order to promote the conservation and
recovery of the country's forest cover.
