A safe way to protect Costa Rica 's hydrographic watersheds!
Safeguarding Water is another innovative initiative the Costa Rican government offers you to help protect the country's hydrographic watersheds and water-producing forests through the Payment for Environmental Services(PES).

The Ministry of Atmosphere and Energía (MINAE) by means of the Program of Payment of Environmental Services that develops the National Bottom of Financiamiento Forestal (FONAFIFO) gives faith that the resources contributed by this means will be invested according to the interest of the donor.

The mechanism is voluntary and simple; through “Safeguarding Water”, those people or companies interested in protecting the hydrographic watersheds can do so especially those who use water for their consumption, productive processes, for hotel services or agriculture. They can purchase a Certificate for Environmental Services (CES) or make a voluntary donation for the amount they choose .

Every person, company, organization or national and international group can purchase the Certificates for Environmental Services under the Safeguarding Water category, among them:

Hydroelectric companies
Persons or companies in the agricultural sector
Soft drink producers, water-bottlers, liquor and liquid producers
Hotels and similar services
Other people, companies and organizations interested in protecting hydrographic watersheds, rivers and wetlands
Public and water consumers in general
Public and travelers in general
money raised will be invested in projects that protect watersheds and surrounding forests, paying the forest owners for the environmental services they lend by heir The CES are issued by FONAFIFO, an autonomous state organization authorized by the law to execute Costa Rica 's Payment for Environmental Services Program (PES), assigned to the Ministry of the Environment and Energy (MINAE).
